this and that in words

oh to get back into the swing of things. it's tiring, yet oh so rewarding. i'm amazed how much i love doing my own house work (after i've had a 3 week hiatus from it). monday and tuesday have been non stop go and i love it. when you're at other people's homes it's a torn internal battle between a) but i'm on  vacation and b) what else can i do for you? there's of course things that i see that need to be done but it's those little things that really get the nitty gritty housework done that give you so much reward. being  a ruler over your dominion is truly fulfilling. example: i scrubbed all the walls in my kitchen areas down yesterday. nitty gritty work? most definitely. but the accomplishment of it looking so great and sparkling afterward is so rewarding. doing all the dishes yourself and knowing exactly where they need to be put away. finding the right ingredients because you know their homes. making batch after batch of yeasty dough concoctions and feeling perfectly happy in the middle of the mess. i'm so very grateful to be a wife, a mother, and a homemaker. it truly is such fulfilling work in my mind.

changing the gears to unhappiness: my hibernating bear has come out of his hibernation mode. cue tears. the past 4 days have been back to waking up at 7:45 am, sometimes waking up in the middle of the night and having to cry for a half hour, fighting me to go to sleep, and sleeping around 10 hours each night. it was oh so fun while it lasted. casey and i will be implements all the known variables we experience from wyoming to nebraska that we can think of beginning with switching him to a pack n play. that's the main difference we can think of between the 2 rooms. here's to hoping for success! oh an remember when he was sleeping well and not eating well? well now he's back to eating REALLy well and sleeping not so well.

this last sunday our stake (pretty much all the LDS members in Lincoln) met up for a special meeting that night to learn of new boundary changes for our wards. we were so saddened to learn that we'll be losing a chunk of around 20 solid active families in our ward (casey was most saddened that stake basketball teams were completely messed up). it's all for good reason and we'll still be friends it's just hard knowing that you won't have as many opportunities to rub shoulders with them so often. with the boundary changes and a few other things going on, casey has lost his whole elder's quorum presidency, it was a hard blow on him this weekend.

last night for family home evening we watched this video that just so happened to be kind of about new years and kind of about helping mom around the house. ha, it was silly but good. i hope casey and maxson got a lot out of the less, wink wink. then we had an impromptu family dance party in the kitchen for about 15 minutes. we kept finding new fun songs on groove shark and dancing away. maxson couldn't get enough of watching us and then excitedly flapping his arms to join or stomping his feet as fast as he could. i'm so grateful to have married the man i did. casey's humor and complete disregard of an ego/embarrassment makes my life so much better. he is my perfect match in so many ways.

maxson was utterly spoiled in our time in wyoming and was ALWAYS held by someone when he wanted. if you're in the kitchen, there's a 90% chance he will be at your thighs, trying to shift your body towards him so you will pick him up while on the verge of crying/yelling. he wants to be apart of all kitchen things going on. loud noises in the kitchen are his favorite: blenders, mixers, bread machines, washing, etc. he is there and he wants to watch it at eye level. cupboard: he's in them. drawers: his toys. he loves all things the kitchen i swear. if there's a counter space clean enough i can pull up a chair for him to watch me as i'm going, but he's grabby and can reach far, so that's hard too. we're both adjusting.

since we're on the speaking subject of maxson let's just continue. he's adorable. 1 year old are so much stinking fun i can't believe it. they are so much work because  they get into EVERYTHING and even when you thought something was get-intoable, he'll make it that way.  BUT for a trade off they are so funny. they understand so much, can't communicate with words too much but can communicate in so many other ways: voice intonation, signs, body language, facial expressions, sounds, actions, i'm just eating it all up. we can ask him where his hair, nose, tongue, and belly button is and he points to them all (when he's in the right mood). we can ask him "what does a dog say" and he sticks out his tongue to pant like a dog. his little laugh is contagious and brings us the biggest smile. he loves to be tickled and chased, and being pretend nibbled on. he is just a ball of joy.

he is HEAVY too, have i mentioned that? picking him up is like lift a brick that doesn't support itself too much. he's somewhere in between 26-27 pounds. AND he's totally grown taller too. he's about as tall as all the other 18-22 month kids around him it seems like.

casey and i listened to the book for all eternity by dr john l lund on our trip back from wyoming. this is our 3rd time listening to the book and it seriously such an awesome lecture series on marriage and how to be a nice person in life, and it's extremely entertaining. it kinda makes me want to go back to college to sit and learn from these professionals. so for the last week casey and i have been working on the 24 hour challenge where you find a block of time for 24 hours that you didn't criticize anyone else in any way: truthful, sarcastic, demeaning. whatever it is, just stop. neither of us are super bad at this but we catch ourselves every few hours saying some snarky comment or putting someone down in some way or another and have to start our 24 hours over again. it's been really good for us and it's fun exercise.

other than that, we're just kicking it in nebraska again. casey back to the books at school. i'm back to domestic home like. maxson back to single child life with all his toys. valentine decorations are up and nebraska is back to it's blah  winter weather.

and since every post deserves a picture:
the stereotype that children are obsessed with escalators rang true as maxson was introduced to his first one last night, all he wanted to do was go back to it every time he got off of it. man with a mission i tell you

there ARE such things as FREE things in life

we've learned new jersians pretty much just throw good stuff away.
ALL THE TIME.
since we're only out here a little over 3 months,
we really didn't bring much with us nor are we wanting to buy stuff out here in fear we won't be able to fit it in our car.

but if something is free,
WELLLLLLL,
that is a different story!
i present to you our free stuff (thus far) in new jersey:
Photobucket

1. a really large (and heavy) wonderful working TV
2. a cute little TV stand
3. a decent sized area rug that was in really great condition
4. a desk that i'll be sewing for my sewing machine!
not pictured:
5. a microwave
6. a new 5 pound weight for me to workout with
and things we've gotten to sell on craigslist:
7. a double stroller
8. a brand new baby car seat
 and other little things!
savage?
yes.
smart and frugal?
yes.

speaking of our little apartment,
i did that whole print out a ginormo picture of yourself idea on pinterest the other day.
if we were going to be here more than 2 moreish months, i'd have done the mounting part,
but we're not.
so i just straight up tacked it to the wall.
it's fun.
and HUGE.
(and it's only like $5 people so go do it!)

speaking of free things,
see that iPad?
...
casey's doing way awesome this summer and sometimes gets free things for being really good at his job.
thanks vantage, you rock.

from drab to fab

this last weekend, we also took our first leap into re-doing something!

from this (yucky old pink)

to this (yes we do love BYU)

the lamps were a hand-me down from casey's parents.
we found new lamp shades for $1 each at D.I.
and deep blue pray paint at RE.STORE in Orem for $2

it was a really fun, relatively small project we got to do together
we both organized pieces of it, casey did the spray painting, i re-did the lamp shades bc they didn't really match (but we made it work) and we both were so happy with the finished product!

yay for us!

we feel like we have new lamps now!

side note: casey and i shopped at Ridley's today for double coupon Tuesday.
should've spent $52.
only spent $7.71

decorating opinons

so, this is my own perosnal opinon
not trying in anyway to hurt your feelings.

firstly.
vintage can look cute,
way cute.
i agree with everyone on that point.
went to an antique store and wanted to purchase many a cute things
didn't though bc their price tags are not so cute

but sometimes it gets out of hand,
like that room looks like a yucky old person's house look.
like you just bought a bunch of stuff that's horribly, terribly used look.
getting my drift?

so, next time you or i, feel like decorating a room/adding stuff to it
let's ask ourselves, is this cute-old or ugly-old?

secondly.
white rooms are beautiful.
white sheets.
white compforters.
white pillows.
white rugs.
white chairs.
white curtains.
the whole she-bang,
it makes a beautiful combination for a room.

but let's be real here.
it's not going to stay white for long,
it's probably going to become off white,
and you're going to have to work on cleaning stuff a lot more.
the combo just isn't realistic, sadly enough.
so dear white rooms:
our relationship is never going to work out,
it's not you, it's me

freshly vacuumed

don't you just love freshly vacuumed carpets?
it's probably onenof my favorite things in life!
seriously!
and no, not just bc i'm newly married.
ever since i was about 13 i've loved the carpet lines a vacuum makes

my parent's house and vacuum does it beautifully
that only increased my obsession and affection for those lines :)

but this new little house apartment of mine does pretty well i'd have to say
you've probably seen from pics we have dark green carpet (which isn't bad, it actually is pretty soft!)
but it shows every little itty bitty piece of anything that's not carpet!
ha!
so we vacuum often :)
but that's ok bc then we get to have pretty vacuum lines

ps-our vacuum has a retractable chord!
best. invention. ever.

pps- not looking forward to ever living in a bigger place.
even our tiny one gets messy i can't imagine something w more than 4 rooms to take care of constantly!
and with more than just 2 people making a mess!!!
ahhhh! haha
and it's so easy to just have to vacuum 2 rooms!

satin sheets

story:
we did our laundry yesterday.
i couldn't bring home the dry load from the house i do it at bc it wasn't dry.
so when we went to bed last night, we had no sheets :(
...
...
...
except for the new satin sheets in the closet that i still had not used.

moral of the story:

I LOVE SATIN SHEETS

on a side note all growing up i told my mom i wanted silk sheets. but i didn't want her to buy them for me when i had a twin bed bc that would only last oh so long and how little time I in actuality had. so one of my wedding presents from her: satin sheets (she thought silk would make you too hot). but once we did get them i was too scared to use them bc i thought they'd be cold, and slippery etc. boy was i wrongo. they are UMazing. so, to all you out there on an 800 thread count cotton sheet: you're missing out, go buy satin (plus they were a great price:)

loves!

Our very very very old apartment

These are some of the funny things that you should know about our house
  • it was most definitely an attic converted to our house
  • the circuit only takes 15 amps, our microwave is 12 amps, this means when we want to use the microwave it would be wise to unplug most everything else or else we'll blow a circuit (we've done this twice now:)
  • the box spring to a queen mattress doesn't fit up the stairs in our house so we sleep on our bed directly on the floor
  • the ceilings are very very short- casey has to duck his head to get into the bathroom
  • our freezer is literally an icebox
  • our oven is heated by a fire that heats it from below
  • when you open our front door, it turns straight into stairs, literally, there's no landing until the top, so when we say goodbye to people we awkwardly watch them walk down the stairs while we stay at the top bc it'd be oober awkward if we squeezed with them and walked down the stairs
  • our side room isn't insulated so it's freezing-we keep that door closed at all times
  • we can hear a lot of what the people say below us
  • there's old wallpaper, cracked parts of the ceiling, and a green carpet that doesn't match at all
  • our stove top is ultra finicky- it's an old gas one so it's either super duper hot and all the way high, or when i try to turn it down, it turns off...in other words, we're getting used to slightly burnt stuff :)
other than these small problems we love love love our little apartment,
it's perfect for us!
come visit when you'd like!

cooking for two

after making a real dinner tonight for almost the first time,
casey & i decided to be super ambitious and make cookies with our new kitchen aid!

i told casey to put on an apron for fun and help & he decided the skirt one would be best...
what a guy eh?
the cookies turned out delicioso btw

other happenings of december:

1.) we went to my ballroom dance company dinner which was fun
we looked like quite a cute couple if i do say so myself!
casey heard there was a one plate rule so he PILED up his plate massively,
put rolls in his pockets,
PILED stuff on my plate so i looked like a piggy too,
and then they said you could get a 2nd plate later...
so much for the savageness!

2) During the whole ballroom thing casey was so ancy to leave so we could go to the BYU v ASU basketball right next door!
we made it over before the first half was over and had a blast!
scott and megan went that night too which made it way fun!
2 things made me proud: look at this awesome white-out student section!
and we beat ASU, and they were ranked!
GO COUGS!

3) we finally got our bedding etc!
thanks you everyone for the bed bath and beyond gift cards :)
we both agree it's so much better to have a cute new, fluffy one than casey's...
cowboys bed spread ;)
hehe casey looks funny in this pic :) and his derriere got a bad angle...poor thing

it's these little things in life that really make it happy

ps- casey and i cannot get thesong "grandma got run over by a reindeer" out of our heads!
we just keep singing it and singing it!. mmeh!
(nicole, amy, or brooke: i thought of you as i wrote that mmeh)
